Opportunities for Women in Cyber Security

Cyber security is the body of technology that protects networks, computers and programs from damage or unauthorized access. We live in a digital world where cyber security is vital. Government, military, financial, corporate and medical organizations keep just about everything on computers and other devices. A lot of this stored data contains sensitive information that needs to be protected. Sensitive data is also being transmitted between organizations and within networks. This transmitted data also needs protecting.

Challenges

Cyber security faces many difficulties. Security risks are ever-evolving. Traditionally, only crucial system components were protected against known threats by a perimeter security. This system is inadequate these days. A more proactive and adaptive approach is necessary. There has been a shift in cyber security towards continuous monitoring and real-time assessments. This is a data approach as opposed to the old perimeter approach.

The reality is that eliminating threats is impossible. All we can do is protect against them. As we depend more and more on technology, the need for security becomes more important. It seems everything can be hacked: cars, home security, mobile banking apps, smart city technology, etc. We need to make sure we do not get ahead of ourselves. Cyber security needs to be able to keep up with technology growth. Knowledge and awareness of cyber security need to increase, especially for companies creating these hackable technologies. The economic impact of cyber security failure could be devastating.

Women in Cyber Security

There are millions of security jobs worldwide that are going unfulfilled. Of the cyber security professionals employed, women represent only 11 percent. Because cyber security is so important, we need professionals like never before. Empowered women could solve this staffing issue. This lack of women in cyber security is becoming a problem that threatens national security.

The nation needs women to step up. Women hold 25 percent of computing occupations in the U.S. That leaves a lot of room in this quickly growing field for women to take advantage. Programs are popping up all over the place to help high school girls learn about cyber security. Organizations across the U.S. are providing education opportunities for women in an effort to alleviate this problem.

Education

Women in tech have an opportunity to dominate this field. Cyber security is one of the fastest growing sectors in tech. The average salary in this sector is nine percent more than other IT workers. In 2020 this industry looks to see a shortfall of 1.5 million unfilled positions. Companies already struggle to find enough employees to keep up with the bludgeoning industry. Women with an interest in tech should consider pursuing a degree in cyber security.

When pursuing a career in cyber security, try to stay well rounded. Become an expert in other tech fields. This will make you better at cyber security. A bachelor’s degree is typically required to become a computer security expert. You will study topics like cryptology, database design, network security and computer and digital forensics.

Cyber security degrees are easy to obtain online.  Schools like Maryville University offer bachelor degrees online. This is a great way to earn a degree. It allows for a flexible schedule and cuts down on the cost of commuting. Earning a degree online has never been easier.

Cyber security is in desperate need of a workforce and women are the answer to this shortage. Every day we become more dependent on technology, and we need security to keep up. You can earn a degree from home and start a career in this lucrative industry. If you already have experience in tech, you are ahead of the game. Careers abound and look to grow over the coming years. If you are looking for a new career, consider cyber security.
