The Worst Items to Clean Your Lenses With

Nobody enjoys having foggy or dirty eyeglasses! Anti fog spray works wonders when preventing cloudy vision, but what happens when you don’t clean them correctly? Certain things shouldn’t go anywhere near your lenses because they’re either ineffective or can cause damage.

Worst Items to Clean Your Lenses

Let’s go over what items you shouldn’t be using to clean your eyeglasses and what you should be using instead.

Things You Shouldn’t Use to Clean Your Eyeglass Lenses

When you’re in a rush, it’s tempting to pick up anything nearby and wipe your eyeglasses with it. Unfortunately, many of the everyday items people use to clean their lenses are causing damage. You might want to think twice before reaching for these items to clean your eyeglasses.

Tissue Paper or Napkins

The materials used in paper towels and napkins are too rough for your lenses and can cause scratches. Not only that, but they aren’t as effective at cleaning them. If there is already dirt or oil on your glasses, the paper towels will smear it around and make your lenses look even dirtier.

A Piece of Clothing

Even if it’s made of cotton, it’s not the best practice to use your shirttail to clean your eyeglasses. Like paper towels, the material on your shirt is too rough for your lenses and can cause scratches if you’re cleaning them while they’re dry. Your clothes also come into contact with dead skin cells and oils that can transfer to your eyeglasses when you wipe them.

Saliva

Never lick your eyeglasses or use your saliva to clean them. It’s ineffective and highly unsanitary. Also, when you put saliva too close to your eyes, you’re putting yourself at a greater risk of developing a corneal infection.

Household Cleaners

Cleaners you use around your house should not be used to clean your eyeglasses. The chemicals are too harsh and can damage the coating on your lenses. Household cleaners are also ineffective and can cause smearing.

Please don’t put any of the following household items on your eyeglasses

  • Window or glass cleaner
  • Bleach
  • Vinegar
  • Lemon juice
  • Toothpaste

Hot Water

Rinsing your eyeglasses under a gentle stream of water is excellent for removing bits of dirt that could scratch your eyeglasses when you clean them. Make sure the water is lukewarm and not hot if you plan to do so. Your eyeglasses aren’t meant to cope with hot or boiling temperatures.

What You Should be Using Instead

If you want to ensure your glasses are clean and streak-free in the safest way possible, you should be using cleaners designed for eyeglasses. Always have a microfiber cloth available to wipe them, as this material prevents scratches. Mild dish soap and water can also do the trick if you don’t have your cleaning solution on hand.

Anti Fog Spray and Clean Lenses Equals Clear Vision and Healthy Eyes

The key to having healthy eyes is to have clean, streak-free eyeglasses to help you see clearly. It’s important to know what you should and shouldn’t be using to wipe your lenses. We’re certain your eyes will be much happier once you start taking care of your glasses the proper way!
