Use Of A Channel In Steel Structures

Channel – a type of the profile received by production of metal rolling. The steel channel is U-shaped and consists of two walls with shelves that are strictly perpendicular to the wall itself.

The construction of the metal channel ensures its endurance to vertical loads (the channel is second only to the I-beam). Steel channel is used in the manufacture of load-bearing metal structures, in mechanical engineering, car building, construction and other industries.

USE OF A CHANNEL

The construction of modern buildings and structures is impossible without rolled metal and metal structures. Metal is one of the oldest building materials, which has been used since antiquity. With the development of technology has expanded and the scope of metal products.

A variety of blanks and structural elements are made from metal. With the help of steel structures, you can quickly erect buildings, including complex design developments. Channels are used in the construction of tall buildings, skyscrapers, structures that are subject to increased loads.

The material for the production of the channel is steel and aluminum.

The first and main purpose of the metal channel is beams of floors, reinforcement of access staircases, earthquake-resistant frameworks and reinforcing belts of buildings. The suitability of the channel for solving a particular task depends on the metal from which the product is made. So, ferrous metal alloys are not able to withstand high loads, therefore, to increase the bearing capacity of walls and floors, steel channels are used, and, more often, hot-rolled.

Channel beams are used for the filament of reinforced concrete structures, the manufacture of cranes, high-voltage power lines, bridges, oil derricks and other structures, which should combine strength, stability and low weight.

For use in structures that are operated in difficult conditions, stainless steel channel bars and galvanized channel bars are also available – they are no less durable, but they have enhanced protection against corrosion, are more inert to climatic differences, and therefore are more durable.

In modern construction and industrial production, a metal channel is quite popular, especially a bent channel – it requires less production costs, virtually eliminates defects, does not require further processing, and has extremely accurate dimensions. Such a channel is easily welded without chamfering and has a strength that is 10-15% higher than that of a hot-rolled channel.

Therefore, if hot-rolled steel channel can be used in the construction of structures of high-rise buildings, the bent channel can be used even in the reconstruction and strengthening of old buildings.

In addition to the standard use of the channel in construction to increase the rigidity and stability of structures, due to its property to withstand large axial loads and bending loads, there are also non-standard applications of this type of rolled metal products. For example, a perforated channel allows you to mount metal structures without welding, which significantly reduces installation time. Channel bars with a large height of shelves and a wide distance between them are suitable for this purpose. Channels with a lower number are better suited for mounting storage racks, since the channel weight, which determines the weight of the rack, should not be large.
